In this performance, I am signifying the elastic “bungee” cord as a system of struggle. The elastic cord is hooked onto the belt loop of my pants and to a screw eye in the wall. Throughout the video, I am balancing the strength of my body against the tensile strength of the elastic cord. The elastic cord is activated because I am hooked onto it; a moving object in space tied to an immovable base. Without my body, the elastic cord becomes obsolete. I struggle to create distance due to the limits I’ve set between my body in relationship to the material—my identity in relationship to a system.
